Back in January, Eric Schmidt predicted Google TV (GOOG) would be on the majority of TV sets on sale by summer. Well, as of right now, the platform can only be found on two sets (both from LG, and richly priced), along with a pair of set-top boxes (one from Vizio, one from Sony). Other sets are on the way, but it's hard to view the OEM and consumer response as anything but disappointing thus far. Meanwhile, Xbox Live keeps gaining momentum, and Apple TV rumors continue afoot.

  • Google TV is basically useless unless they integrate it with the cable company systems. And that will probably never happen. For Google TV to work they'd have to buy a cable company.

  • Looks like Eric Schmidt over-estimated Google TV, didn't he?

Looking forward to his next prediction so I can bet against it.

  • He also predicted that developers would write for Android first, iOS second. That prediction failed to come true as well.

  • I do believe they are headed in the right direction. There are a few parlor tricks you can do with a Google smart tv device and a smartphone (non-iOS) that shows the potential. It is a hard sell to the 85million ages 45 to 65 that will soon experience smart products in the US. The industry still needs to educate. Live events over wifi.. Say the Olympics..

  • I think google has quite a few irons in the fire here. Don't give up too soon. I'd bet on goog before MSFT, though Xbox and Kinect have been clear winners in the gaming space. Apple will have competition, esp on the AI, VPA and multimedia front. Sony can also not be ruled out, though many have done so. (Playstation is not dead yet, very much alive.)
