SA author Martin Redfield sees much ado about nothing over the looming expiration of a pair of patents held by Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR -1.5%). For starters, the current filter design isn't covered in the expiring patents and appears to be protected until 2017. Then add in the reality that aspiring cloners have very little viable market choices with the other patents in play that limit their cartridge options. Did Einhorn's patent research go awry?

  • I thought the problem with GMCR was all about internal accounting problems?

  • The Bottom line is K cups are not selling that well. People are not going to pay .50 a cup at home for coffee when the novelty wears off.

  • I disagree. I don't think it is a novelty at all. Was the percolator a novelty, or the drip coffee product? They stood the test of time for many years, and so will the Kcup system.
