Six states presently collect sales taxes on Amazon (AMZN) purchases, and another seven plan to begin within the next few years. Many more could soon announce plans, as Republican governors looking to balance budgets join Democratic counterparts in supporting the concept. Four states with Republican governors - New Jersey, Nevada, Virginia, and Texas - have struck tax-collection deals with Amazon, and other such as Florida could soon be on the way. (also)

  • why the states are negotiating with AMZN doesn't make sense? Every company that sells on the net should be taxed the same. Fair is fair. A state should never give a discount to an internet operation 5 states away over the store down the street where local residents work.

  • Because we have made the politicians so afraid of raising taxes, even when it makes sense, is fair, and provides balanced playing fields for retailers, as technology evolves. Nobody to blame but us (well, blame mainly the wingnuts and TPers.

  • So TPers are NOT about fairness and balanced playing fields? And the same for Wingnuts like Dr. Paul? Wow. I learn something new - and different - every day.

  • The laws are written so that Amazon has been able to argue that without a physical presence in the state, they don't need to collect sales tax. NJ's agreement with Amazon included Amazon putting two distribution warehouses in the state. Nothing gets done without greasing the wheels of government.

  • Unfortunately for consumers, the trend is that AMZN will eventually reach agreements with all states that tax purchases.

  • Not surprising that Rick Perry (Texas) would OK added taxes on middle and poor. Texas already has some of the highest sales taxes, but the wealthy avoid paying.

  • Texas has 13th to 15th highest sales tax, but no income tax. 18th place factoring local taxes
(http://bit.ly/Q0lUQ8). Arizona, California, Illinois are most severe. AND income taxes, boy oh boy.

A good state comparison, all of the various subtle and not state robbery rates:

Some would say I'm wealthy, and I pay sales taxes in Texas. Of all that I know who are wealthier than I, they pay them. In the past people allegedly drove over county or state borders to e.g. buy a car or boat but I understand that that's been closed off. Are there current loopholes that the Rich Folk Oppressing The Lessers Club didn't tell me about in their last newsletter?

I'm afraid the hate-rich-people play doesn't wash too well here.
