Contract manufacturer Pegatron has begun producing the next iPhone (AAPL), sources tell Digitimes. The report meshes with expectations of an early-fall launch. The site also claims Pegatron will be producing a new iPad (likely the iPad Mini), with "a few million units" expected to be shipped in Q3. Separately, 31% of respondents to a June ChangeWave survey said they're likely to buy the next iPhone. That's well above the 21.5% who last October said they're likely to buy the 4S.

  • Yet again, please don't use Digitimes as a "source" without a caveat as to how unreliable it has been in the past.

  • It has been mentioned in the past that Digitimes has a mixed track record. My preference is to note Digitimes' track record when discussing rumors that seem particularly questionable.

On the whole, Digitimes is better at reporting on what Taiwanese contract manufacturers and component suppliers are up to, than at determining what the OEMs these companies do business with are planning.
