Nokia (NOK) has scrapped a software project it had hoped would compete with Google's (GOOG) Android, sources say. The Linux-based software platform, code-named Meltemi, would have replaced Nokia's aging Series 40 software, but was reportedly abandoned as part of a massive cost-cutting effort.

  • I could have sworn the news about Meltemi's demise were around for a long time.

Still, one has to wonder, what in the world is Nokia planning to do with its feature phone business, just forget about it?

EDIT: here it is Jun 14th http://bit.ly/PLTCI5

  • Yep I am pretty sure this is very old news.

NOK: up 11 cents, almost 6% in pre-market trading. :-) Up for a 4th consecutive day today on Helsinki exchange.

  • I'm sure it's older than 1 month news, but days melt into each other as you get older. Here's an article on Meltemi getting boot dated June 16.

  • not even the news is old but the information doesn't make sense.

If Meltemi is a replacement of S40, do you think Nokia really "hoped would compete with Google's (GOOG) Android" ?

  • Interesting. It's pretty much old or completely inaccurate in everything. Asha/S40 runs Java ME, GetJar has tens of thousands of Java ME apps. i.e. More than for Windows Phone.

And... with WP 8 requiring dual core CPUs it is never, ever going to compete in price with the low end stuff the S40's run. I doubt it'll even boot.

I'm assuming this is an automated release for the pump and dump bots, triggered by the percentage increase in the stock. Though Pete Cunningham and Tarmo Virki do appear to be a real people, just way way behind and otherwise clueless.

Looking at his blog though, maybe Tarmo is an aggregator bot.

  • Bulls take long-term shot at Nokia

Nokia has been falling for years, and now one investor thinks it's ready to bounce.

optionMONSTER's Heat Seeker tracking program detected the purchase of about 50,000 January 2014 5 calls for $0.33 to $0.36 against open interest of 38,664 contracts. It accounted for more than half the volume in the mobile stock so far today.
