Rackspace (RAX) has officially released cloud infrastructure services based on the OpenStack platform, which Rackspace and many others are pitching as an open-source alternative to Amazon and Microsoft's dominant proprietary solutions. CEO Lanham Napier says Rackspace doesn't expect to match Amazon's pricing, but hopes to have an edge in performance and service quality. He also claims OpenStack will help Rackspace lower capex by allowing it (like Amazon) to use commodity IT gear.
