Sprint (S -3.8%) discloses in its Q2 10-Q the SEC recently "issued a formal order of investigation" related to its sales tax collections. The investigation comes after New York's AG filed a $300M+ suit in April over Sprint's alleged failure to collect $100M+ in sales taxes over 7 years.

  • This is a non-event as it was already disclosed via the filing of the suit.

The swoon is more-likely related to the European mess and general market tone today; Sprint has exhibited this sort of beta spread for the last several months although it's nowhere near as bad now as it was a few month ago when the risk of a funding dislocation was hanging over their head.

  • New York's AG needs to concern himself with other things. The Empire State is $14B is debt, collecting sales tax from Sprint is a waste, in my opinion. AG is looking for political gain with this one. Try investigating flash trading on Wall Street. This could be your ticket to the bigtime.

Lift the stupid moratorium on drilling for natural gas and get things moving in NY. Pennsylvania has found a way to frack without harming groundwater. Politicians in NYC need to tour Western PA to see what a boom is taking place. Quite worrying about your "upstate" water supply. Western NY has nothing to do with NYC water. Lift the ban!

    Apologies for going off topic.

  • Yeah...just a little off topic. But it's good. It going to be hard to make up that $14B in the hole with just a Sprint problem and I too feel it's political positioning....figures. But, if he's trying to make it to President, he's a little late to get his name on the ballet....don't you think.

Maybe one of his big contributors to his campaign is Verizon!

  • Nothing surprises me in The Empire State. It is what makes living here so much fun! Would love to see the AG's portfolio, AT&T or Verizon have to be holdings, right?

AG could be positioning for Governor when Mr. Cuomo runs for President in 2016.
