SAP is paying archrival Oracle (ORCL) $306M in damages to make a long-running intellectual property theft suit go away. A jury awarded Oracle $1.3B in damages in 2010, but a judge lowered that figure to $272M last year. SAP has already paid $120M in legal fees to Oracle, and a $20M fine to the DOJ.

  • Paying Oracle $306M is quite a bargain given the original judgement was $1.3B. SAP is getting off easy.

IMO (and speaking as an Oracle shareholder) Oracle's legal team has lost its once-legendary luster. The SAP settlement is just one of three disappointing outcomes in the past three major trials for the company--in addition to the reduction of the SAP judgement, there's the outcomes in the Google case and just this week the HP decision.

    Larry, fire your lawyers....puh-lease!
