Research In Motion (RIMM) +3% AH after Bloomberg reports IBM has informally approached RIM about acquiring its network operations centers (NOCs), which secure/compress content delivered to BlackBerries. Many have called on RIM to turn its NOCs into a standalone business that services multiple platforms. But former co-CEO Jim Balsillie was reportedly kicked out for wanting to do this. Bloomberg adds no one has shown interest in RIM's hardware ops, and no talks between RIM and IBM are currently under way.

  • Who started this rumor? RIMM shareholders? That would be a dumb move for IBM!

  • "IBM made an informal approach about possibly acquiring the division, which operates a network of secure servers used to support its BlackBerry devices, said one of the people, who asked not to be named because the matter is private."

  • Not going to happen, RIM's not selling it's NOC. RIM needs a partner to produce low end smartphones, look for ZTE or Huawei to produce low end BB10 phones.

  • Nowhere the article said when this "informal approach" took place. Certainly a while ago.
