Desperate to hold its own against Verizon and AT&T, Sprint (S) is now offering new customers a $100 AmEx gift card with the purchase of any smartphone. That includes the iPhone 4S, which Sprint has made huge purchase commitments for. Sprint recently cut iPhone 4S prices by $50, a move Apple's retail stores subsequently matched.

  • Sprint often does a "bounty" promotion during the seasonally weak Q2 and Q3 for customers who switch or otherwise "port out" from another carrier to Sprint. Last promotion being Q2 during spring last year. This is partly to mitigate ETC charges from other carriers that a subscriber may be leaving from.

Evidently this year, Sprint is using that promo budget to make offers to all "gross adds" who activate new lines on an iPhone 4S irrespective of whether switching or simply adding additional line. It seems to be getting lots of free PR to boot.

You will note that Apple's "price match" offer (http://yhoo.it/NBhw6R) in Apple Stores of an additional $100 credit in Apple Store purchases is ONLY valid on a Sprint iPhone 4S activation. In essence, Apple is a partner with Sprint on this promotion (in that Sprint clearly is compensating Apple for the promotion price match) and Sprint and Apple are working together to help both Sprint and Apple juice up 4S sales before the new iPhone 5 product launch, after which, if history is any predictor, the 4S model will drop $100 across the board at all outlets.

Hardly "desperate" but standard operating procedure that has resulted in 10 straight quarters of positive net adds on Sprint's CDMA platform -- it's called "merchandising".

  • Well I hope they have had positive net ads on the CDMA platform, given that they are shutting down iDEN. Sprint needs a metric to boast, cause everyone knows that their EBITDA margin will never crack 20% in the foreseeable future given the ridiculous deal they signed with Apple.

Still shows that Sprint is poorly managed in relation to AT&T and Verizon, and the reason that DT will never merge T-Mobile with this Company.

P.S. That is why Metro PCS shut off their acquistion engine to instead focus on profitability (called window dressing)

  • Looks like they're trying their best to shift the iPhones they've prepaid for before the iPhone 5 is launched. All actions point to the fact that they're woefully behind on their $15.5b commitment to Apple, and are doing their best to raise whatever cash they can from their old iPhone 4/4S inventory.
