More on the VIX below 15: A chart of the VIX going back to 1994 shows 2 lengthy periods in which it held below that level - both were accompanied by healthy returns for the S&P. The VIX today -1.5% to 14.63.

I have been following the ratio between VXX and SVXY (the short/inverse of VXX). The 2 behave as expected which means that whatever it is that determines the VXX pricing is consistant.
Furthermore, the contango effect is minimal.
This doesn't mean that the VIX works, what it does mean IMHO, is that gambling on VXX is a leveled field.

Anybody have any explanation as to why the VIX took off yesterday? It seemed the S&P just did what has been doing for about a week, which is very little, and therefore almost no volatility. Also, UVXY took off too; one of the trading component's for that index, and there seemed to be plenty of contango still to go around? So, why that jump in that investment?

The VIX (broken) when low don't expect significant volatility any time soon but I'm seeing price action flying up and down. However, today has been boring so today the VIX is working.
