Wow. I don't think they are "stumbling" into either area at all. They seem to be making small, strategic investments aimed at increasing market share in growth areas - like bottled fruit drinks. SBUX is a company with a ton of cash and they seem like they have a good plan to put it to use.

$100 million for 19 bread stores in one small geographic area???
is selling beer and wine novel? what about the vending machine deal?
what is their identity or focus? they are drifting into common restaurant territory
they have wildly over expanded in china and europe at the worst time just as both are slowing. I recently traveled around europe and was surprised to see so many sbux shops mixed in with local coffee places. their coffee is mediocre and expensive and there is stiff competition and changing metrics from K-cups
