Monday, August 20, 2012, 1:41 PM ETThere's no drought in California, but a scarcity of workers in the high unemployment state could send fruit and vegetable prices higher. "We just left them in the ground," says a farmer of some of his crops after being unable to find pickers. How about local residents instead of illegals? "None. Absolutely none (are interested)," he says, even for semi-skilled work paying $12-18/hour.

Only suckers work. And, it seems there are fewer each day to pay for the freeloaders. That's why the Government wants to grab ever higher amounts of their wealth.
My dad did work for the same farmer as a second job - he would get up at 1am on Saturday morning to go load up the trucks, drive, and set up/work at a farmer's market until early Saturday afternoon.
The amount of time my father thought about the idea that the government should be helping him make ends meet? ZERO hours, ZERO minutes, ZERO seconds. And number of times I heard him complaining? ZERO.
If this story is true and these jobs are going wanting at the rate of $12 then everyone within a 50 mile radius should immediately lose any government unemployment and other programs they receive. This goes to the core of what type of country we are.... and I dare say that we aren't moving in the right direction.
And what exactly is a "living wage"?
Most liberals and socialists don't understand 'cause and effect' so your going right over their head with your statement. While correct, your statement also misses the real issue. When I was young, children worked, I worked for almost nothing. So did all of my friends. Not any more, it is against the law. So young people no longer learn what it means to work and no longer take up menial jobs while they are learning. The effect is 'they don't learn'.
He/she finds out who are vendors at various farmer's markets in the area.
Gives these vendors the opportunity to come in and harvest the product for a cash payment to the farmer. They will buy as much product as they have working capital to purchase or feel they can sell at the market.
These vendors have the inititive to get out and work and make a profit on their labor and are not sitting around waiting for handouts.
I try to buy their products every weekend for a variety of reasons.
So maybe the farmer has become a little lazy in trying to find inovative solutions as well.
The answer is ..they are lazy and on the government teat....we need to cut off the teat...hunger makes people change their ways...some will riot....but some will get to work....the rioters will end up in a bad way....
