NetApp (NTAP) has expanded its Virtual Storage Tier solution, which allocates storage based on performance needs, to include server-based flash memory. Central to the effort is Flash Accel, a caching software product that runs on servers, and the company's new partnership with server flash module leader Fusion-io (FIO). Rival EMC has opted for a go-it-alone approach. Unlike EMC or IBM (previous), NetApp still hasn't bought or developed standalone storage hardware specifically built for flash.
