More on Apple-Samsung: The jury rules Samsung (SSNLF.PK) owes Apple (AAPL) $1.05B in damages. Apple has been declared innocent of all of Samsung's software patent infringement claims, and Apple has been barred by patent exhaustion from enforcing two patents. No damages for Samsung. AAPL +1.3% AH. Expect Samsung to open lower in Seoul on Monday. Mobile patent plays such as InterDigital (IDCC) and VirnetX (VHC) could rally on the verdict. (more) (live blog)

Samsung was also found by jury to have "willfully breached" so besides damages, not clear who adjudicates the punitive compensation.

the issue was never regarding money in any case. It was with respect to injunctive relief, i.e. whether the Judge's injunction against the Galaxy Tab can be extended across to Samsung's smartphone line-up. Will be interesting. The bulk of what samsung was found to have violate in terms of software parents, as opposed to design patents, is really violations by Android of Apple's software patents.

The real impact is the potential for increased licensing fees. Once license fees increase, then the cost of every smartphone increases, from every company. If the increase is significant, it may slow purchase decisions in the future.

Apple (AAPL) wanted $30-40 per device sold in 2010. Look for consumers to pay $30-40 more for each android device for the 'apple tax'

Microsoft already claims that OEM's making 70% of the Android smart phones already have taken a MSFT license -- because Google is an "Equal Opportunity Stealer". GOOG needs to finally come clean and negotiate licenses from those that it has stolen from in order to allow Android to prosper. But the boyz at Goggleplex are too wed to their "Do Only Evil" motto and don't seem to have the adult supervision required to respect the property of others.

And that $12.5B of cash pissed down the toilet for Motorola has done wonders to "protect" Android. Guffaw as in GMAO!

MSFT gets somewhere between $5 and $15 from Android vendors for licensing. The license for running Windows Phone is not much higher. If Apple tries to push over $30 per license, I'm not convinced companies will simply pay it, and they may instead shift. Suddenly RIMM licensing BB10, or the upcoming Amazon and Mozilla smartphones, don't look like bad ideas.

The real impact is that this very possibly spells the end of Android. Not tomorrow or next week but eventually. Android is tainted. Developers will be reluctant. It will gradually get banned or restricted or forced to pay killer license fees (no longer free). Google may very well stop working on it. Google is really royally screwed here. Notice the Bing search engine which has magically appeared on my list of bookmarks on my iphone. Google is going to get shut out of mobile which will simply kill it. Look for Google share price to descend into the 400's or maybe even 300's by this time next year.

Apple has just been handed the keys to the kingdom. The most powerful company of our time just got a whole lot more powerful. And if anyone knows how to leverage this magical windfall it is our guys in Cupertino. This is bad for ATT and Verizon. Certainly the end of all that nonsense about eliminatingg subsidies. Subsidies will get bigger. Profit margins will be squeezed at the telecoms.

The power Apple is going to accumulate from basically owning the high end of mobile can be leveraged elsewhere as well. Look for Apple to be over 800 by Christmas. Over 1000 by the end of 2013 or sooner.

How bout crus? I think they benefit greatly from this. Msft? Helps for sure as it will open a hole in the smartphone market but not sure if it will move the needle. The play, I think, to make the most from this are option calls on NOK. Very cheap. Probably not quite so cheap by the time you can buy them Monday, though not sure the understanding of how much this helps (rescues) Nokia will have become public knowledge early Monday. But for sure. Nokia/Microsoft smartphone will get more traction. If Latest Samsung smartphones are banned from USA for any significant time all hell is going to break loose. Even RIM may benefit.

Yikes. Monday is going to be one crazy day!

I kinda of feel sorry for Samsung since, excepting the trade dress issues, all the software utility patents were due to Google's Android being the culprit for grand theft.

Ever wonder why the Windows devices, from Nokia, and those same Windows smart phones even from Samsung and HTC are not being sued for patent infringement -- because Microsoft knows how to negotiate licenses as opposed to the brats from Googleplex who think they can steal from everyone and that it's their God-given right to steal.

Samsung should get more punishment. It has been shamelessly mimicng much of the functionality and design of Apple's products. Imagine you spend nights and days to write a novel, and someone steals it, changes a few words and claims to have its copyright. How do you feel?

NOK and RIMM will be pleased, this gives them some breathing space. Microsoft will be happy they invested in Windows Phone 8, this gives them some IP freedom in the smartphone wars.

Another reason why aapl is still a great company going forward. They announced $10 Billion buyback of their own shares in March 2012.. BINGO..first, the earnings are calculated on outstanding shares thus more growth to come also, a company does not buy back their shares if the stock is expensive. I think there is a lot of room ahead and more dividend growth to come. So far, no one has their tech!

Buying VHC BIG on Monday!! Patents seem impenetrable without infringing. Should be $50--$60 soon. William Blair initiated "outperform" rating too. Reputable firm.
