Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) has opened an R&D facility in San Diego, the home turf of mobile chip giant Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), as it steps up its smartphone/tablet processor efforts. Intel has already listed 30 openings for 3G/4G engineers in the area - the company probably wants to integrate its 3G/4G modem tech, obtained by acquiring Infineon's mobile chip unit, with its Atom mobile processors, so as to better compete with Qualcomm's integrated Snapdragon processors.
