A made-in-the-USA label holds more value with consumers than in the past, with +75% of respondents in a NPD survey saying the manufacturing source of their apparel is important to them. Though Sears (SHLD -1.5%) and J.C. Penney (JCP +0.9%) sputtered with their brands manufactured exclusively in the U.S. in the past, the recent flareup over the European look of the U.S. Olympic team's uniforms designed by Ralph Lauren (RL -0.9%) has put the issue on the front burner again.

  • Until the "consumer" compares the price tags.
Did the survey actually show the price differences for clothes with and without the label? I doubt it.

  • Can get a pair of sneakers at walmart for $12, (China made) but that pair will literally rip apart like paper within 3 months. Same with the $15 pair of sneakers you can get at Costco.

Objective buyer will look at both price and value.

I will be happy to pay a dear price for a high quality product with a long life to it.

  • They are capable of making high quality sneakers in china too, and very price competitive. Probably Nike has them made there or somewhere cheaper.

  • More bloviating from the JCP regime today, pops the stock a dollar but falls back as Ron's groupies figure out that they are being played once again.

  • It is all about "Maximizing profit" Think about it? When Walmart changed to China East did the prices really go down? NO. At best they stayed the same while the cost of product to Walmart was cut in half.

  • When JCP started carring an exclusive brand called American Living ( by Ralph Lauren) I couldn't believe it wasn't made in the USA.
