Italian security forces yesterday safely exploded a device outside Aloca's (AA) unprofitable aluminum plant on the Italian island of Sardinia. Workers have been protesting Alcoa's plans to gradually close the  smelter unless a buyer is found. The installation employs 500 people, with another 1,000 jobs directly depending on it.

  • Companies are in business to make $ if it is not profitable enough in 2 years to supports break even years or years in loss then only a few choices since AA has sites all over world it makes good business to close the ones that are not making $ or ones with largest loss. sorry just way it is...

  • It's all about the cost of energy with aluminum and smelting! If the government won't help, close down the plant and let the government support the out-of-work employees.

  • Aluminum smelters need low cost power to be profitable. Alcoa closed some in USA and is building in Saudi Arabia and Iceland where cheap natural gas or hydro power is available. As Spiker says, that's the way it is.

  • Nothing says "please stay here" like a bomb placed at your front door! But hey... it's Italy.
