The next wave could see heavyweights players such as CBS, Netflix, Coinstar, Amazon, and Apple start bidding even higher to land exclusive rights to premium content or move in the other direction to invest in their own original programming

IMO the music industry puts out garbage starting in the early to mid 80's and it only got worse with some exceptions. Taylor Swift would have never made it until she did it on her own. Now some of the stars cannot even sing and there are not great bands with personality and talent which is why the Rolling Stones still rule.
I recognize that delivery has changed and so has profit margins but there is no "must have" artist out there any longer.
