    Quebec is "swimming against the tide" with its move to ban shale gas exploration and production "without weighing the implications," Claudia Cattaneo writes. Extraction is in its infancy and technology and industry practices are improving quickly, but there's no appeasing Quebecers more concerned that fracking used to unlock shale gas deposits could contaminate drinking water.

    So, what they really mean, then, is that Quebec is going to wait for the rest of the world to figure out how to safely extract shale gas, exhaust their supplies of it which Quebec can purchase cheaply due to oversupply, and only then allow safe, extremely profitable extraction of what will then be a precious and highly expensive resource. Those Quebeckers are crazy, all right. Crazy like a fox.

    Quebec isn’t the only jurisdiction taking a go-slow approach (the wisest approach in my view for many geographic areas) to fracking. See the following May, 2012, article describing in detail the way this issue is playing out in Germany.
