Coinstar (CSTR) and Verizon's (VZ) Redbox Instant streaming JV will launch somewhere between...

    Coinstar (CSTR) and Verizon's (VZ) Redbox Instant streaming JV will launch somewhere between mid-November and mid-December, Verizon exec Eric Bruno tells Bloomberg. Bruno adds the service will offer monthly rentals and purchases in addition to subscriptions, and (like Netflix) will support non-PC devices. Verizon and Coinstar have suggested in the past their service would differentiate itself from Netflix (NFLX), mocked as "rerun TV" by some, through a greater focus on movies.

    Who writes these little blurbs? I have no problem whatsoever with the bulk of the comment and positively appreciate the comment about how they hope to differentiate their service from other streaming products but why refer to Netflix as "rerun TV?"

    I don't know about their viewing hours but anyone who implies Netflix doesn't have substantial movie content either has an axe to grind or isn't familiar with the service. Why not talk about the impact on Vudu? There is a service that is almost exclusively focused on movies (and a very fine product as well).

    I wrote this one. Just for the record, I'm a happy Netflix subscriber. For $8/month, I think it's a pretty good deal, especially for a cord-cutter like me.

    The "rerun TV" remark was a reference to criticism of Netflix's service. If you click the link, you'll see it goes to a Google search turning up a lot of references to Netflix as "rerun TV."

    Netflix still has a decent-sized movie collection, but it's pretty clear they've made a calculated decision over the last 12-18 months to focus more of their licensing efforts on TV programming. And now that the STARZ deal has expired, their selection of popular recent movie titles is pretty limited outside of Epix's library, which they just lost exclusivity for.

    Appreciate your reply. I did take a look and yes I agree a fair number of people have made the comment about rerun TV although it looked to me that it originated with a comment by a Time-Warner executive. While that sort of a comment still rankles with me as I have loved the way Netflix introduced me to movies (particularly foreign language) that I never would have watched/discovered without its recommendations you made a fair statement and I don't think you have an axe-to-grind.
