Wal-Mart (WMT) says the time is right to expand in Japan for the first time since 2008. The company plans 22 new stores and will consider new acquisitions as it looks for a restart in the nation after its first launch fizzled ten years ago. One difference this time around is that the retailer will use its prodigious global supply line instead of relying on Japanese middlemen for products.

  • Good luck. Wow Wal Mart must be really desperate if it actually sees Japan as a growth market, not to mention that they will cut Japanese middlemen. That has been a poor strategy in the past.

  • Domestic Japanese market is the most uncompetitive I have seen. Food prices, for instance, are ridiculous. In Nagoya, one carrot - not a bunch of carrots - is 100 yen (about $1.25 american). Now the carrot is big and it tastes good, but damn, $1.00 per unit is absurd. A watermelon costs about $26.00 US - for one small sized watermelon. Don't forget, there is a 20% import tarrif on food distributors who bring food into Japan from outside sources.

The domestic Japanese economy is too protected. If they open it up, it will be good for alot of companies.
