Spanish bank stress tests show the nation's lenders need €59.3B in capital. Santander (SAN) and BBVA are among 7 banks that do not need capital. From Marketwatch: "Results show banks mostly solvent, viable." Who could have predicted that?

They "need" that because they have debited provisions against capital for non-paying loans, but these have collateral of land and buildings, etc, and it would have been cheaper to suspend repayments for 5 years and not provide, as in the long run time will be the great healer. This has worked well in Latin America.

Not surprised that Santander passed the stress test but isn't the stock price still vulnerable simply because many investors will group it with the rest of European stocks and the situation may fail to improve there?

And how rigorous were the stress tests? Were they like the stress tests about a year ago, and within a short period of time, one of the supposedly safest banks in Belgium had to be bailed out to the tune of over 100 billion euros.

For some time I provided feasibility studies for a developer. In some instances I needed the numbers to work, no matter what I had on the table. This is what we have here. The whole construct is based on trust and they really do not want to rock the boat. This whole thing has just been a confidence building exercise, nothing more.
