Press invitations for an iPad Mini (AAPL) event will be sent out on Oct. 10, according to a "major Apple investor" speaking to CNNMoney and claiming he heard the news from "multiple sources." AllThingsD reported in August that the Mini would be launched in October. The device is expected to sport a 7.85" display, and be thinner than the regular iPad thanks to its use of new touchscreen tech.

  • I had heard the stories about how the new 5 feels in your hand and dismissed it as hype. but for the first time yesterday I went to the apple store and held it in my hand. It is incredible...very light but substantial feeling. I dont know how they did that. It was blazing fast in uploading videos and has many more free apps already loaded.

  • It does give a surprisingly lighter impression. Saw my first one in the wild. If you hold it and my 4S at the same time, you find the weight difference is less than you thought, but holding the 5 alone with its larger size and lower density, the difference is noticeable. And quite pleasant. Didn't actually think it would matter, and it's not like I'm going to run out and buy one, but kudos, Apple!

  • iPad Mini that is faster CPU wise (A6 or variant) and GPU wise than any Android phone or tablet by a wide margin, the Mini iPad will be as fast or faster than the iPhone 4s, iPad3, and the iPhone 5, priced within 50-100 dollars of Google and Amazon's very poor tablets, Christmas 2012 is all Apple again.

  • I'm actually a little worried that that is to big. 7.85" isn't quite as portable as a Nexus 7 or Kindle. And is just big enough that I could see it replacing my full ipad where a 7" model probably wouldn't.

  • The size will be in a sweet spot that Apple hasn't addressed so far. I read a concept a few weeks ago that Apple will leave no market unchallenged. Here it goes into the small tablet market. I agree with leokaplin, go long APPL and short AMZN.

  • I agree with the "sweet spot that Apple hasn't addressed so far" comment because up until now, if someone wanted a smaller tablet, they had to go out of the eco-system to get it. AAPL has let a lot of revenues go to Amzn. Depending on whether AAPL can leverage this size and weaken Amzn's strengths, AAPL should do well. I actually believe Amzn is in the best position to compete head-on with AAPL. I don't even think the Nexus is in this conversation. On a "new iPad" note, I won't doubt for a second that the Samsung Galaxy Note will take some of the iPad revenues, though. It is sharp. I have two iPads and I'm not changing, I'm just saying it is sharp.

  • earl,
If you think the ipad mini is a "bunch of bull" thinking its a rumor to drive up the price, you need to do more research.

Are you going to bet next that the iphone 5 is a rumor?

  • I am anxious to get a smaller and lighter ipad. Although the ipad is not heavy, it seems to add noticeable weight to my briefcase.....so much that I end up leaving it at home. So the lighter weight is a big part of the appeal. And I do want the option of a screen larger then my iphone.

  • I fully agree with DanoX : Christmas 2012 will be all Apple!
I own a iPhone 5, New iPad and two other family members at home are using iPod Touch and iPhone 4S! Given my spouse now use my iPad 3 several times a day the iPad Mini launch is a very good news for me... I plan to buy 3 of them as christmas' gifts!!!
As a long AAPL I will do as much as it is possible to accelerate the death of the PC.
The Spirit of Steve Jobs is still alive at Cupertino!
