Alcoa (AA +0.2%) shares pare earlier gains after forecasting an $0.08/share charge in Q3 due to the Environmental Protection Agency's remedial action plan for the Grasse River in New York. AA has worked with the EPA and other agencies to evaluate remedial alternatives to address elevated levels of PCBs in fish in the river.

  • I worked for AA in Massena 1968-75. Nobody cared about PCBs then and the rivers were a free way to get rid of troublesome stuff. We are paying the piper now. 85 Mil isn't exactly loose change even to AA.
Still isn't clear to me whether the fix is to dredge up the PCBs or to cover them up with more dirt or some combination of the two.
BTW, I ate fish from the Grasse and I'm still kicking at 86!
