The Obama administration gives a green light to the first section of a proposed 146-mile transmission line, calling it a critical upgrade to the faltering Northeast power grid. The high-voltage line is capable of carrying up to 500 kilovolts and will replace an existing line carrying 230 kilovolts. PPL (PPL +0.3%) will build the 101-mile Pennsylvania portion of the line.
