The House's Intelligence Committee has recommended Huawei and ZTE be shut out of the U.S. telecom equipment market due to security fears caused by their Chinese government ties. Unclear is whether the committee's stance will affect only infrastructure sales, or also the companies' U.S. mobile phone sales, which are growing quickly. Either way, infrastructure rivals such as CSCO, ALU, ERIC, CIEN, and TLAB must be pleased. (previous) (Huawei IPO rumor)

  • LOL - the real question: Security concerns or a protectionist agenda?

  • The claims are primarily IP violations, and a mistrust that both firms will somehow wage cyber espionage/war with through selling their equipment in the US. Yes, I'd like to see the evidence, as the latter sounds desperate. Protectionism begets protectionism, so this may indeed be an excuse.

China is also our largest creditor and where our tech firms manufacture at relatively cheaper costs. Yes, the imbalances are there, but they aren't all one-sided. While we accuse China of currency manipulation, we originate the practice (actually, historically, they originate the practice through thousands of years of fiat money mischief, but who's counting?).

  • that kind of infrastructure is an open key to just about everything. Military and commercial. It is not protectionism because the main beneficiaries will be European, ALU and Ericson. Cisco has been left in the dirt by not putting enough into research.

  • The Europeans are also worried in relation to any spying activities of Huawei. They could be economic and military communications. It is likely that the EU manages to make the same decisions.
