SunPower (SPWR) has bought a 42% stake in Diamond Energy, an Australian renewable energy project developer, with an option to grow its stake in time. It's safe to assume Diamond will now rely on SunPower's solar modules. Solar vendors have been working overtime to increase their exposure to system installations (I, II), a business whose margins haven't been thoroughly crushed by intense price competition.

  • I'm gun shy of SPWR; They were losing money before the acquisition by Total and are continuing to do so now. I guess total must be funding
their acquisition of the 42% of Diamond Energy. Also; Total is fossil
fuel type of energy company, so I can't help but wonder what their motives are towards solar.

  • Good point about Total's possible influence on the deal. They bought a controlling stake in SunPower to boost their renewable energy exposure, but their ambitions on that front go beyond solar.
