Monday, October 15, 2012, 2:40 PM ETTopeka's Brian White found sentiment regarding Windows 8 (MSFT) to be "overwhelmingly negative" during meetings with PC supply chain sources, with suppliers warning facilities could be idle in December. Ultrabook sentiment has also worsened, as high price tags limit sales. Given how depressed PC industry expectations have already become, a moderately enthusiastic consumer response to Windows 8 could be enough to pleasantly surprise the Street. (more)

.. I just checked and the lead time is now 3 weeks.
And I tend to think that if everyone is so negative it might be time to start buying more.

Other than geeks, people aren't going to get excited until - a) they know they need to buy something (marketing which barely started a couple days ago), and b) there's something to market/sell (hardware, in particular, which cannot yet be purchased).
The problem is, for example my neighbours. The mom, mentioned the iPhone 5, was aware of it, and curious. When I mentioned windows 8, she was, what is that? When is it coming out ?
That means consumers are unaware of windows, its become unimportant.
Windows 8 isn't out. You can only within the past few days pre-ordered it, and unless you happened to catch the ads during the NFL games yesterday, would never have seen an ad for it.
Also, you have to remember, iPhone is riding a wave of pop-culture sweeping stardom. Windows is a fantastic brand, but is
utilitarian and isn't something you can touch. Remember, Windows changed the world as much or more than iPhones -- but there's also some negative perceptions, and a lot more time has lapsed. In 10 years, I expect that they'll be saying the same about iPhones -- everyone may have one, but the launch of the latest one will not be a buzzing affair. Even the iPhone 5 launch wasn't nearly as much of a gossip event as the iPhone 3G was.
-Covering their own shorts by stirring up negativity <or>
-Covering their butts for a probable mediocre quarterly report -- most tech companies report in the next 1-2 weeks -- if you're going to be seen as accurate, you'll temper the enthusiasm prior to this report, but then bump it up soon after -- anyone who expects a mind-blowing quarter this past quarter is clearly asleep at the wheel.
