3.4M were Android phones (many of them were probably Galaxy S III units) and 3.1M were iPhones.

The number of iPhone 5s doesn't matter. We already know that Apple sold 5M the first weekend and sold all they could build. A 3.1M quarter for Verizon projects to be 26-30M quarterly sales for Apple.

This is just their pre-announcement initial inventory. Anything ordered after that could not have been booked as sold in September, because lead times would put deliveries into October.

I think this will hurt the stock price for the quarter and offer another opportunity to buy. However, Verizon is not the only carrier and we need to know what international has activated. Remember last quarter when analyst kept on basing estimates in the US only and they were wrong. International now is very important.
Offcourse the production constraints will hurt still but I believe that even if this quarter fall short of expectation, next quarter will be a terrific quarter.
Another factor is that Apple lost in court to Samsung and Samsung will be selling more in the US. Hard Core Apple lovers will not change but those who are looking for bargains will either buy the 4S with much lower margins or a android based phone.
These are all of my guesses off course. Hard to really know since Apple is really lover for its simplicity.
Will see what happens but I think a pull back in stock price at or under $600 is a great bargain and I will jump in.

pman - while that may happen, keep in mind that analysts keep lowering their expectations so that a beat on the upside is probably more likely than a disappointment on the downside

It seems everyone is forgetting that Iphone5 sales just count for 9 days in Verizon Q3 quarter (10% of quarter period and 20% of iPhone sales). Last year, Q3 iphone sales were sequentially lower than Q2. Iphone5 earlier arrival this year reverted that trend. Regardless other variables like international markets, This is NOT a bad number at all.

Verizon is not particularly Apple-oriented. They were late to the Apple party. Having been a customer of Verizon since 1994, their product placement in the stores certainly has not favored Apple. I'd be more interested in AT&T's figures.

You can interpolate and project what total iPhone sales were off of the Verizon and T numbers. At current levels, it's starting to look almost like a risk-free trade going into earnings and iPad mini. The stock is simply not going much lower than $630 or so and iPhone sales will either beat or substantially beat projections. I love these modest sell-offs going into earnings. It creates a very reasonable downside and big upside potential if 30 M or so iPhones sold in the quarter.

Apple isn't doing that bad when you consider that the sales people at Verizon try to get people to buy anything but Apple. I've experienced this a couple of times with friends who were purchasing a smart phone from Verizon. They tried to talk my friends out of getting an iPhone.

This is another buying opportunity., Don't wait, buy. What the Street doesn't understand is that when companies like Google, Microsoft and Intel miss, it is directly related to the fact Apple is the new paradigm. Afterall the only other tech company doing great, Samsung, copies Apple. I was at a T-Mobile store the other day and could plainly see the Samsung phones copy the iPhone in look and feel. Obviously. Which is why they lost the lawsuit and will have to pay Apple.

But the bigger issue is that Apple is doing great gangbusters now and eating everyone else's lunch and dinner. Since Q3 has only a short iPhone 5 sales period included it may not wow everyone, but the next three quarters should be grand slam home runs. and by then the election is over, the fiscal cliff issue is at lesat temporarily solved and Apple will likely hit $800 or more.

i bought some shares at $645 and i am not worried at all. You will only loose money if you sell and apple WILL have a terrific 4th quarter and stocks will come back up above the $750 price.
Now when it hits $600 i am buying again.
My guess, and it is a guess, is that not knowing what will be the tax rates on capital gains for next year, people are cashing in some profit but this is temporary.
I am a small investor and i always buy 25% of whatever number of shares i want at a time. This allows me to average my price and it has worked for me.
