While the conventional wisdom says that immigrants take jobs from Americans by undercutting them on wages, says Eduardo Porter in the NYT, research indicates that immigration has mostly not led to fewer jobs for American workers. In fact, it appears that immigrants help strengthen the economy in the long term, leading to increased profitability for companies and lower prices for some products and services.

  • I hate these generalizations such as all immigrants do such and such. Immigrants working off the clock are going to undercut American workers and businesses. Immigrants following the law will strengthen the economy with their particular talents. But there is no penalty of any consequence for working off the clock. We rely heavily on voluntary compliance with our tax system. When confidence is lost in the system, just as when confidence is lost in a corporation, there is a rush for the exits.
