AngloGold Ashanti (AU) issues an ultimatum to striking workers at its Vall River and West Wits operating units to return to work by Wednesday or be dismissed. AU's South Africa operations, which account for about one-third of its total production, have been halted since Sept. 25. Workers returned after a similar threat from Gold Fields (GFI) but attendance at Anglo American mines remains below 20%.

  • Having spent half of my career in mining, I can say miners are well paid. Their work is usually very physical and continuous split second mental alertness is a necessity to avoid accidents. Having said that, they are too often like spoiled children who need the big picture forced at them to show them how much better off they are than the average person, respectfully of course. Mine safety is better than it has ever been. You are safer in a mine than walking on any busy big city side walk; or crossing any busy street. Gold mining is looking very promising if these miners are just made to see the big picture. I urge you to help management find ways to keep the big picture front and center for these miners who insist on causing trouble and disruptions; and hurting themselves for no good reason with these disruptions. It certainly looks like bottom up greed. Exposing this greed should substantially mitigate it.
