Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 1:58 PM ETNext up from Apple (AAPL -0.8%): An updated regular iPad (Apple calls it 4th-gen). The device features an A6X processor (2x as fast as A5X), faster Wi-Fi, a Lightning connector, similar battery life, and unchanged pricing. And the iPad Mini: it sports a 7.9" display (as expected), is 7.2mm thick (23% thinner than regular iPad), and weighs just 0.68 lbs. Apple also announced a revamped iBooks app - the education market clearly figures prominently here. (live blog, webcast - available on Safari)

Competing for market share without regard for earnings is called "buying the business."
Or, like Google or Amazon, a company might run a " loss leader.". So far, that is not doing either one much good.
Remember SJ said that he wasn't interested in the small tablet market and now here we are with an IPad Mini. Obviously they stole enough potential sales that AAPL felt compelled to get into the space.
Recent marketshare on the IPad is just north of 50%

And does it have a Retina display?

You also get seamless sharing of all your stuff, and the "just works" advantage.
Not for everyone. By design.
And the savvy buyer would have known that Apple does not sit on it's laurels on any product, new products every 18-24 months.
Can't drive a _________ forever!
I've enjoyed my iPad 3.
If you can afford them they simplify and improve your life.
No more Windows or Android, that alone is worth every cent.
As a bonus you also get a finely crafted bit of quality engineering to use as opposed to the trashy plastic rubbish sold by all other manufacturers.
The iPhone 5 makes all other phones seem like disposable flimsy junk.
When customers get their hands on these products the sales will go trough the roof. Poor Microsoft is dead in the water...
Put on the AAPL blinders and short MSFT if you have the brass to back up your opinion.

I watched The Event on my iMac and then while I fixed lunch, watched more on my iPad on stand above my kitchen sink. My "new" iPad, 3rd gen, will become my second computer in my house, which it already is. The mini will be my "travel" computer and tablet.
So..... what Apple is trying to do is
1) maintain a high margin (no margin compression on mini iPad)
2) minimize intra-product cannibalization (people still willing to buy the new new iPad or the mini iPad depending on their preferences)
3) differentiate its mini-iPad from the rest and position itself as the premium brand. It's not trying to compete with Amazon/BN on price, but on prestige.
4) with the higher price, It expects lower sales volume and perhaps it wants to. Due to its initial supply constraints, it's gonna sell everything it produces anyway, all the way past Christmas and even into Chinese New Year. However, I'm sure after January 2013, it will have to lower its price if it wants to use the iPad to penetrate the education sector and the price-conscious buyers.
Apple really does know what it is about as the international education market is potentially huge and needs such an excellent devise with its eco system system is one of the ways forward.
Well done Apple again
