Hacker collective Anonymous has posted an alleged Zynga (ZNGA) transcript indicating (in imperfect English) the company plans to announce 800 new job cuts, raise capital (ed: Zynga has $1.6B in cash/investments), find a U.S. online gambling partner, and outsource game development to India. Anonymous is threatening to take down Facebook (FB) and release Zynga games to the public on Nov. 5 if it doesn't backtrack. On Tuesday, Zynga, which employs ~2,800 workers, said it would cut 5% of its workforce; its oversized R&D budget suggests more job cuts are likely.

  • Hey, how about that? Extortion over the internet, and openly in public. Cyber warfare against a game developer. How ironic.

  • It has been described in some places as a handful of geniuses guiding a legion of idiots.

If this is deemed a credible threat, I would imagine the FBI is already on it, as well as other international security agencies.

  • They "were" , FBI had some of them arrested, hired a contractor to get them, the contractor was exposed, and emails were released from the contractor.

  • Anonymous should focus and personalize their attacks: go after the individual scumbag execs that have been looting the company.

Because if they're having money problems now, it will only get worse if their games get involuntarily open-sourced, which just means more layoffs and more executive looting.

Although, taking down Facebook probably isn't a /bad/ thing.... ;-)

  • gambling online or using the internet for said purpose is illegal. why would an otherwise legitimate company threaten the American people in such a way? Are the games still not real enough? Or shall we blame "hackers Anonymous" for what we know to be our own doing?

  • Read their supposedly leaked memo. There are many grammatical errors that read like some bad documentation I have read coming from overseas. I suspect that memo is fabricated.

  • lol, why the hell would Zynga need to raise capital with 1.6B in cash. This is the dumbest thing I've ever read. And Anonymous can't take down Facebook. They've threatened that before and nothing happened.

  • also they will "release" game to the public. Um the games are already released to the public, Most of zynga's games are social games that require you to be in constant contact with a server so giving these games away will make no difference if you play it or not. Also they are flash games that require a browser. Why is this even on here, as this is nothing more than a joke.
