Chamber of Commerce President Thomas Donohue likes the "new tone coming out of the White House"...

  • Tuesday, January 11, 2011, 2:23 PM ET
Chamber of Commerce President Thomas Donohue likes the "new tone coming out of the White House" and thinks Bill Daley is "a real pro," but warns that Washington must do more to expand trade, cut the deficit and reduce regulations including repeal of the health care overhaul. "We cannot allow this nation to move from a government of the people to a government of the regulators," Donohue says.

  • While simultaneously pushing the administration to sign, yet another, "free trade" agreement that will wipe out another strata of our workers.

Korea has already been a net receiver of our jobs WITHOUT the agreement, sure, let's help them take more while selling a couple GM cars and singing Kumbaya.

The US Chamber works for the likes of Walmart and GE. Neither of which creates family-supporting jobs. Both of whom continue to intentionally destroy jobs within our borders.

As for Daley being "good for business." Well, I'm 100% positive he'll be great for the banks and foreign investors, I doubt his ability to save a small business - or their tax revenue and jobs.

  • If we don't buy other countries products where are they going to get the money to buy ours. Free Trade hopefully gets the best products to market at the lowest prices. There are some strategic reasons for producing things here but overall if it is a level playing field all benefit. The layer of workers you talk about will need training into more productive and lucrative fields. Protectionism never works!

  • It seems to work for China. It worked for Japan while it built its auto industry, it works for Korea....What are you talking about? "protectionism never works" is just neoliberal dogma.

  • The new White House may sound different but what happened to redistribution of wealth and rich can afford to pay more taxes, etc etc. Is BHO moving to the center or just trying to get reelected. He has fated out the voting public before.

  • What a joker - if we had no criminals, we'd need no regulators.

  • I think he means "Government by the people (who are corporations)". To me, regulators look more like people than the companies paying Tom Donahue.

  • Government of the people? When, where, what? Maybe instead of getting government out of business, we should try to get business out of government. Government of the people, by the people, for the people. Has a nice ring to it. I don't see a reference of government for, by or of business. Government is supposed to do things that the private sector can't or won't do. National defense, police and fire, welfare etc. Things that don't make money. Things that are done for the people. That's why we pay taxes, and have regulations.
