Microsoft (MSFT) wants to take on SAP and Oracle in the in-memory database market: Redmond claims the next version of its SQL Server database will include "Hekaton," an in-memory solution it promises will deliver huge performance gains. Much like the virtualization market, Microsoft is hoping to undercut the competition by bundling its in-memory product with existing, widely-used software. Demand for SAP's Hana in-memory database has been soaring, as enterprises rush to adopt it for demanding analytics tasks.
