Research In Motion (RIMM -3.7%) will begin selling its first BlackBerry 10 smartphones on multiple continents within 30 days of the company's Jan. 30 launch event, says COO Kristian Tear. Some analysts had been expecting a March debut. Details are still pending on which carriers will initially support the phones, and if any will have exclusivity deals. The rumored L-series is likely to be among the first devices.

  • Exclusive deals would have the potential to kill initial sales volumes, especially in the United States. When some people wonder if there even are BlackBerry phones anymore, then RIMM need to reach wide to get sales. Many people will not change carriers for a new smartphone.

  • Is there any reason they should be exclusive? Does it matter anyway? Maybe RIM'd rather ramp up sales slowly, given that it's now a much smaller company, and hasn't bought out a new product for an awful long time.

Besides, if it's as good as some claim, a bit of exclusivity may give it some extra cachet, and keep prices buoyant. Flooding the market could have the opposite effect, especially as the coming holiday season won't leave much for further smart phone sales in Feb/March...

  • AT&T (T) may be one company wanting some form of exclusive, though the last BlackBerry that RIMM gave an exclusive to with AT&T did not sell as well as other non-exclusive models.

Many people do not change phones that often. Add to this the practice of many carriers charging upgrade fees, or possible billing changes for people moving out of old plans, and sales of any smartphone can face the same barriers. The real test for RIMM will be seen after the first two quarters of 2013, and quite simply, they need to sell more smartphones than the same time period in 2012.

  • everyone forgets that RIMM is still number 1 in virtually every market other than North American Consumer Market, It virtually owns Business and Government world wide (90% of fortune 500 companies and most governments use Black berry because of security features, It is the only one to get Defense sept creditation, and is number one on Asia, Europe, and South America. I wonder if there is not a massive manipulation afoot, here is a company with no debt, almost3 billion isn cash, and 80 million subscribers, moreover its book valu is almost 3 times its stock price, Whats really going on?
