New technologies to extract natural gas from shale and coal beds leads the IEA to double its estimate of global gas reserves. "A few years ago the U.S. was ready to import gas, in 2009 it had become the world's biggest gas producer," says a gas expert at the IEA. "This is phenomenal, unbelievable."

  • Supply has grown faster than transmission capacity. Moving all this NG around is proving to be a problem and is one reason US hasn't more forcefully adopted NG as a larger portion of its energy consumption.

That's where I'm looking right now.

  • While that's true, environmentalists aren't all that pro-natural gas even though it does have a much smaller carbon footprint. Their focus is on carbon-free energy only, and this administration has been greatly influenced by the environmentalist view. Look no further than energy secretary Steven Chu who was named as secretary after having stated that we need to get gasoline prices aligned with European prices. To them its not about a comprehensive energy policy but a carbon-free energy policy.

  • Sitting on top of all this natural gas and we are forcing automakers to produce battery-powered EV cars - how much sense does that make?

Natural gas hybrids are the low-hanging fruit of energy independence and emissions reduction.

  • A lot of sense, Mr. McHattie. Recovery of this natural gas by "fracking" is destructive to the environment, pernicious to the the water table, destabilizing of the geological infrastructure and non reversible. This last factor means that we gormandize our grandchildren's inheritance to sate our present lust.

Renewables such as electric vehicles -- and others -- represent an investment now in the future of our children and their world. The issue is a moral one for those who have the capacity to judge right from wrong and to assume the duties of responsible citizenship.

  • While I support natural gas a good energy alternative (it is cleaner than other sources) and do invest in it from time to time, I am concerned about some of the consequences of these new methods. Take flammable tap water for one www.huffingtonpost.com...
