    The San Diego Union-Tribune calls on California Gov. Jerry Brown to tap the state's huge shale oil resources; the Monterrey formation is believed to contain 15.4B barrels of recoverable crude, four times as much as North Dakota's Bakken. But California has committed to getting a third of its energy from renewable sources by 2020, and risks getting left behind as the rest of the world digs into shale.

    That would be a huge windfall for California. Will be interesting to see what CA does with it.

    Legislation was passed to promote "green" energy, and then permits to install "green" energy have been systematically blocked. There is a Greenwashing (Blackmail) happening with some faux environmental groups funded by construction unions: if companies engage union workers to construct "green" energy, then the permit process is fast tracked; if companies try to build with private contractors, then faux-environmental groups backed by unions file blocking lawsuits in the name of "protecting" the environment. The corruption is so massively deep in California that only pay-offs to construction unions will get shale oil projects approved.

    I can attest to having the same experience with the union connection to the permitting process. Our firms will NEVER again invest or do business in CA under the present system. To many other places where there are able and willing workers, effective and efficient permitting authorities and much lower tax rates. I wish them the best but not on our dime.

    Let's hope that CA accomplishes its goals on green energy. This will allow them to keep their shale asset in the ground for ffity years. At that time when the world is out of shale oil, then CA can really make a killing.

    Oil prices would need to rise past $200 per barrel for the CA shale oil plays to be profitable. So don't expect it to happen in your lifetimes.

    Completely agree! And $200 per barrel will crush demand and economies so again CA shale plays are a non-starter.
