Marissa Mayer might finally be planning those huge job cuts many have called on her to carry out: sources tell Kara Swisher Yahoo (YHOO) will implement a new performance-measurement system with the goal of identifying the "bottom 20%" of workers, with the goal of lowering the compensation allocated to that group. Also, Yahoo has cancelled a policy of giving most workers the week between Christmas and New Year's off. Yahoo cut 2K jobs this year ahead of Mayer's arrival.

  • So what decile are you in? Why I am in the 2nd decile so now I don't participate in meetings because I am not as smart as the first decile.

  • I don't like a company-wide policy of identifying the bottom 20%... at least don't announce it publicly. It creates a sense of paranoia and unhealthy interaction between co-workers.

  • Yeah - agreed. That doesn't sound at all like a positive thinking management decision.

  • Hey, they are not public school teachers. They are working for a company that is trying to return to prominence. This is a high stakes game and she wants to be first, number one, the top company and she needs a team of dedicated employees who believe they have the talent and resources to do it. I think it is great she is challenging all her employees to be the best they can be; In these challenging fiscal times she does not have the luxury to keep all of them, so by announcing ahead of time 20% of them are going to be fired it gives them all a chance to show their worth and talent to her and the company. Nothing is hidden, it is out-in-the open. Everyone knows what is expected. The ones who have talent, energy, resourcefulness, ambition, creativity, and fire will survive; the lazy and uninspired will fall to the bottom. Remember, Yahhoo! is a public business not an off-shoot of the Obama administration. There is no free ride at Yahoo! or any other business I know of. You either find a purpose for being or you end up closing the doors on your business. I admire what she is trying to accomplish as CEO. She wants a lean dedicated hard working team and she wants Yahoo! to be number one in the industry. Good for her! I want a CEO that wants their company to be tops in the industry. So Surfnspy, it is fun to go to work when great things are expected of you and others. It is a drag to go to work when the status quo is the only expectation. When everyone is trying to make Yahoo! number one in the industry than it is fun to go to work and to succeed. If only government workers had the same enthusiasm for success we would not be approaching this fiscal cliff.

  • Let's put this in perspective:

    1. Yahoo's leadership has not performed for so many years I cannot even date it. That includes the CEO and the board. The fish rots from the head down.
    2. When leadership does not perform the rank and file drift and are not focused. They end up not performing either. Kind of like an army or a squad with no leadership. They all end up dead.
    3. Yahoo needs to cuts costs so that is really the driver. Upgrading talent is a better story then whacking heads.
    4. Finding the bottom 20% is political and fortuitous. If you happen to be in a growing business you are probably OK. If not you are in trouble even if you are a genius. If you have a great leader you will be fortunate. If not look out.

    That is the real world.

  • Dead on Tomami.....I worked for Uncle Sam for 32 years and I can tell you that it is not fun to work in an environment that encourages lowering the bar to exceed. It kills creativity and does not reward those who perform.. Good for her. I look forward to the end results. $$$ Oh, and most of the employees will respect her for that decision because there is nothing worse than working with peers that intentionally under perform.
