It's another special dividend announced for December, this one from Franklin Resources (BEN +1.2%) for $3/share. Other asset managers/securities industry names maybe looking to help their owners beat the tax man: WDR, CBOE, CME, and GFIG.

  • Would it be a fair conclusion that these mega-dividends will be dumped back into equities on Jan 1?

  • They can be "dumped back into equities" anytime. Recipients of the dividends have no time constraints in that regard.

  • I guess it depends on the payment date and the number of companies paying big dividends. Theoretically we'll have cap gains selling and div paying almost until year end. Thus my Jan 1 date

  • If CBOE were to declare a special dividend, when would be the latest date for dividend to be sent to the present shareholders. Would the CBOE have to make declaration in November for December payment or could it be made in December for December payment. It presently has a dividend payment on Dec. 21st for its quarterly dividend. Thankyou

  • (from a NYT article) " John Moorin, the founder of a medical equipment company near Indianapolis, said he sold about $650,000 in dividend-paying stocks like McDonald’s and Coca-Cola a few days after the election, worried about the potential increase in taxes.

“I love these companies, but I’m so scared that now all of the sudden I’m going to get taxed at such a rate with them that they won’t be worth anything,” Mr. Moorin said. "

If that isn't a texbook example of fear-based investment decision-making, I don't know what is. [They won't be worth ANYTHING?] Aggregate that and you have the irrational market in a nutshell. (So to speak.)
