Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang, who is set to become premier in March, said China needs to accelerate its economic overhaul, including the opening up of the economy. However, Li warned of a "fortress area" that can stymie progress. His comments follow concern about the conservative make-up of the new Politburo Standing Committee and its willingness to reform.

  • the fortress area is usually a symbol of defensiveness or resistance to change. predictable, understandable and therefore it can be coped with.

the deep water area would usually symbolise the unknown or unknowable, the threatening, action from a concealed place, from below, unseen.

it is a very strong symbol.

  • An economic overhaul is not the major problem in China. What needs overhauls are the political system, land ownership rights, and a legal system that actually works. None of those seem to be in the near future.
