Ford (F -0.1%) might delay the launch of new versions of the Galaxy and S-MAX minivans due to a planned shutdown of a factory in Belgium, according to a German news report. The company says a transfer of production for Ford Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy models to a plant in Spain is also an option.

  • Cost cutting moves in Europe are an excellent strategy thanks to Mr. Mulally. Some short-term disruptions are most-likely inevitable in the process. I am really interested to what degree Ford will be able to reinvent the Lincoln brand with the launching soon of the MKZ. Will the product be worthy of the namesake himself?

  • If Ford must disassemble, transport, and rebuild the entire assembly lines' worth of tooling and imspection test equipment from Belgium to Spain, then that could easily take many months of downtime. It is probably cheaper than building all new tooling from scratch, but it is still a munumental task.

Presumably Ford has a plan to minimize the costs and downtime, although it does give a whole new meaning to the concept of a "moving assembly line".

It is still a question as to whether the Belgiums will simply "allow" Ford to remove and transport those heavy machines and tools out of the country. One can just picture them laying down on the freight train rails all the way to the border...
