Thursday, November 29, 2012, 10:29 AM ETIs Windows 8 making a bad situation worse for the (non-Apple) PC industry? NPD believes U.S. retail sales of Windows gear is down 21% Y/Y since Oct. 26, the day Win. 8 launched. Notebooks -24% and desktops -9%. Also, thanks to inventory-clearing and perhaps also a cautious enterprise response, Win. 8 has only made up 58% of Windows device sales since launch time, compared with 83% for Windows 7 in its first 4 weeks. 6% of Win. 8 notebook sales involved touchscreens, and ASPs rose to $477 from $433 in the year-ago period. I tried demoing the product at my local BJ's and I had to laugh. The opening screen says activation is required before you can launch it; so much for trying it out.
I am still scarred by my Vista experience - what a piece of crap it is.
Although INTC is also in Apple desk/laptops so maybe undeservedly getting nailed.
I never read the instructions on anything anymore. If it's not intuitive for me to handle it, I wouldn't recommend it. I have been a Windows user starting out with their first edition...what was it~1.4???
And, I'm 75.
It took me about 7 total hours to be able to get past the Window 8 opening screen, and create the Win 7 look, that I was accustomed to for 3 years. Win 8's opening screen of course caters to the current touch screen fad, and I am not one of those. I have been able to create/set up my PC desk top and task bar to a near complete duplicate of my Win 7 settings. Setting up the second PC took less than an hour to set up to replicate Win 7. At first, I thought that Win 8 would be the demise of Microsoft, but now, after setting up two computers with 8, non of which are touchy types, I have no regrets. Win 7 or 8 is now much the same to me, except for the opening screen.
I have observed that Win 8 closes and opens faster than 7, and that's about it.
I too started early with DOS 3.0 and have had just about enough of Mr Softy.
