    Redbox Instant video streaming service will launch as soon as December 17, according to a GigOm report. Subscriptions for unlimited access will start at $6 a month. The service - a byproduct of a joint venture between Coinstar (CSTR) and Verizon (VZ) - will be available for web users, iOS devices, Xbox 360 consoles, and some Samsung TVs and Blu-Ray players.

    This looks like a game changer. I stopped my Netflix subscription because the content was poor. If Verizon offers newer content at the price noted, $6/month, they will have a winner.

    Ditto; i am very satisfied w/ Netflix DVD service, the selection is unmatched. But their streaming service was poor; i killed it after only only a few months. no depth to selections and what they offered was not compelling. I am hopeful redbox can do better; CSTR needs a catalyst. long cstr

    I agree. Netflix movie selection is several years old. The one thing that netfix does have is TV shows. New movie content will be a winner for Redbox.

    I seriously doubt that Redbox movie selection will be any better. This will likely be a bust. Especially since Verizon is involved (Vcast anyone?). They have new DVDs at their kiosks because there was a legal framework in place to provide that service, i.e. rental stores. The online video market is limited because of the content providers. If Netflix could get permission to stream new releases they most definitely would. Redbox will likely end up in the same situation.

    I currently use Amazon Instant Video as part of my Prime membership on my XBOX 360 and am satisfied for the most part. I'm not exactly sure how Amazon's streaming movie and TV library compares directly with that of Netflix's, though. I used to be a streaming and DVD rental customer for Netflix and saw a lack of substantial content updates and increases -- in fact, I've heard of recent networks taking away content from Netflix such as History Channel and A&E. I'm curious to see how RedBox can differentiate itself between the two. Otherwise, (at least for gaming consoles such as PS3 and XBOX 360) consumers will have three separate but indistinct options which seems unnecessary.
