The Defense Department will pay $3.8B for 32 F-35 fighter jets and extra equipment to manufacture and test them after it finally comes to an agreement with Lockheed Martin (LMT) over the fifth batch of the planes following long-running and tense negotiations over cutting expenses. Under the deal, Lockheed will pay 50% of some retrofit work that is needed because the aircraft are already being built despite flight and weapons systems still being tested.
