Wednesday, December 5, 2012, 9:17 AM ETMore on Nokia: In addition to the Lumia 920T, Nokia and China Mobile will be offering the Lumia 620, a WP8 device that goes for just $249 unsubsidized. The 620 has a 3.8" display, dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and 5MP camera. It could be a better seller than the $739 920T in a country where much of the smartphone market is controlled by cheap Android gear. The 920T's price is notably above the $450 AT&T is charging for the 920 without contract. NOK +3.5%.

All the very best,

The business model on the mainland is far different from that in the USA where a monthly fee on a two year agreement lets the provider recoup the cost of the subsidy for a discounted device to the customer. In China it is still pay as you go, albeit with a myriad of plans, some of which carry time commitments. The carriers seldom subsidize the cost of the phone compared to outside retailers, but they offer incentives as value added to the data and airtime plans for customers who buy the phone from them. This gives a context to understand the news about NOK's agreements with China Mobile. Those will be 'full price' retail sales, supported by incentives added to the service plans.

I wonder if they introduced this double layer body to make life difficult for counterfeiters in China... It's a massive problem there for phone makers.
But you can. Just use http://bit.ly/LaW2Kk
It's the one thing the Bing button is useful for. Get the web page up on your screen with Chinese characters.
Press the Bing button.
Choose the eye (scan text button)
Point camera at the screen
for chinese you need to make the characters quite big so you may need to take a photo of only part of the screen.
Press the Scan Text button
When it puts boxes round the characters choose the Translate button. You may need to choose the languages to give it a hint.
Hilarity ensues. It's really not very good but can give you at least a basic idea of for example a headline, as long as you ignore the complete nonsense that it also comes back with.
