    The return of manufacturing to the U.S. is just getting started, writes Charles Fishman, telling the remarkable story of the rebirth of GE's giant Appliance Park, which employed 23K in 1973 and less than 2K 28 years later. Assembly lines are moving again as GE invests $800M. "I don't do that because I run a charity," says Jeff Immelt. "We can do it here and make more money."

    If this happens (and it might just happen because of Nat Gas and Bakken etc.) - well, than the grass is greener on this side of the fence again.

    Economies experience abnormal growth when a disruptive technology changes the overall efficiency of the society. Bill Clinton happened to be president when the Internet Browser was invented ushering in the Dot.Com boom and President Obama happened to be president when oil and gas fracking came to fruition. Now the US has a 6:1 price advantage over Europe for natural gas used in manufacturing. Our GDP should be growing by 5-6% per year instead it is expected we will fall below 2% for the fourth quarter. President Obama will use the fiscal cliff to blame others for his failed policies.

    If this is true then I will CERTAINLY purchase my next appliance from GE. I am in need of a dishwasher, but am reluctant to purchase one because getting a plumber for a dishwasher on Long Island at this time seems so trivial. There are still hundreds of people misplaced with no heat and/or no home. I will wait until early Spring. I just hope GE has a US made dishwasher by then. Keep on plugging. We can be the greatest economy in the world again one job at a time.. .

    Have you thought about doing it yourself? If you have a dishwasher now, correctly installed, it's a piece of cake to replace it. I am not a plumber but was able to do it. You'll be surprised how easy some of these DIY appliances are today.

    Are they going to do something about the poor waranty and poor quality? This industry reminds me of Auto not to long ago when service, quality and warranty amounted to crap and along came the imports and the rest including the but kicking of the domestic industry is history. History has proven that over the long run, those suplying a reliable quality product and good customer service win. This industry needs to learn something here!

    One thing I find helpful -- actually read an article before you comment on it. The article had practically NOTHING to do with fracking, it was speaking to broader issues such as product innovation cycles and the hidden costs of offshoring. The only real reference to energy costs was how a tripling of oil costs makes transoceanic shipping considerably more expensive, working against the ostensible labor cost advantages of offshoring.

    I bought a samsung front loader washing machine to replace my almost new 2 yr old ge washerthat failed.
    Big mistake. I wish i had my ge washer repaired.
    GE should put effort in regaining the appliance business by improving quality.

    Apple is also moving a plant back to the US. Drop in the pond for Apple but better than nothing.

    Whirlpool also moved a plant back from Germany to the US as well
