    Regarding the Saudi intervention into Bahrain, Stratfor notes the situation must be becoming "increasingly untenable for the regime." The leader of the hardline al-Haq party says Saudi interference opens to door for Iran to do the same, though such action seems unlikely at present.

  • Bahrain is home port to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet and is a strategic U.S. asset. The revolt is fomented by Iran. Look for Saudi Arabia to put down any dissent in the short term. Long term is more dicey but it's looking more and more like Iran is itching for a fight.

    One must hope that affairs in the Arabian peninsula do not become reduced to, on the one hand, repression by feudal monarchs and chieftains of Shi’a populations and urban youth seeking modern transformation of their societies and, on the other, resistance to such repression increasingly led by less democratic and inclusive elements. A struggle reduced to these terms on a prolonged basis would set the region back in many ways and serve to exclude more productive alternatives.
