Intel (INTC) has officially launched its S1200 (Centerton) Atom server CPU line: it's hoping the dual-core, 6W chips can head off the threats posed by ARM (ARMH) server CPUs and AMD's SeaMicro unit, and address the needs of Web companies deploying hundreds of thousands of cheap, dense, energy-efficient servers. At $54 apiece, the chips are far cheaper than most of Intel's Xeon server CPUs - GigaOm notes Intel is dealing with an innovator's dilemma. Analyst Charles King argues Intel has a 12-month head start on ARM, but Oppenheimer isn't impressed.
